Aidan 5 Car sounds from a space heater 04/10/2011

Currently working on another episode of Aidan 5, and decided to use some sounds from this space heater that gets pretty interesting when powered up. Here is a clip of the raw space heater:

The low hum is coming from an Audio Technica ATM23 (for the gear heads), at the end of the plastic tube. The heater core, and temperature control areas were mic'd with a pair of NT5s.

Here are a few more versions of the heater, this time with a little help from some Sound Toys plugins.
Here is some Low Frequency material, taken from the ATM23
And the end result, programmed into Kontakt, Is a playable spaceship on a midi keyboard. The idea was that the ship would have two engines. One would control vertical thrust, and the other horizontal. The vertical thrust is controlled using the pitch wheel, the horizontal with the modulation wheel. I still need to do some tweaking with the engine turn on/off sequence, adjust the mix, and add some more detail to it, but we're getting there. Thanks to Rob from FATHOM for some Kontakt tips.
Thanks to Laura for the photos!

I am currently at GDC, hanging out in the audio sessions. One major announcement I am looking forward to is FMOD's new realtime mixing solution for games. I'll be writing more here over the next few days.

Screen shots from the Island 01/02/2011

This is the volcano on the far side of the Island, that will eventually be active. This was a fun part of the exercise, as it showed how quickly the environment can be altered and brought to life. The volcano only took about 10 minutes to raise and paint.

This portion of the exercise was where the light source was introduced. Unity has a built in flare source to model the sun. All of the shading caused by the angle of the sun in relation to the landscape is automatically calculated by the engine.

I just entered the scripting portion, and will be working in Javascript. Unity also supports C#. I did a rough build of the Island, and can already walk around.

New Gear = Good Times! 12/16/2010

We just picked up some new toys at Vaughan Music Studios, and had a blast with them during Steve Swanson's session. We picked up a pair of JBL LSR4300s, and the Universal Audio 710 Twinfinity Mic Pre.
The JBLs are great... Tons of detail, but not sterile.
Check these out:
JBL LSR4300s

The Universal Audio pre was great.  The tube setting is great on vocals. Being able to switch over to the solid state circuit, and blend the tonality adds a tons of versatility. I'm excited to use this some more in the future.

Check it out mix magazine's review here:

Pro Tools 9 Arrives... In flight recording sessions! 12/14/2010

I remember when I was in college and Digidesign was raving about working on your record while flying. What a great marketing campaign... I thought that would be great. Now I am sitting on a plane with my 15" MacBook Pro and Pro Tools 9, and would love to automate this vocal, but my neighbor in front just smashed my screen into my keyboard while reclining. While readjusting my posture, I elbowed my neighbor in the face. For some reason, I am no longer inspired.

Anyone want to buy my outdated MBox2?
